Recently, I’ve been wondering how much damage people do to the Ender Dragon.
If we can figure out the average, then we should be able to find out how much damage we need to do to basically guarantee to score in the top 3 most of the time.
So, I’ve started keeping track!
I knew that dragons have different levels of health, meaning that the most effective way to calculate how much damage you need to do is calculate the percentage of the dragon’s health the first place person must do.
In the May 13, 2020 Skyblock update, all dragons had their health increased. All of the data used in this take place after the May 13th dragon health update.
Why should we want to do more damage?
The higher you are on the damage leaderboard displayed at the end of the dragon fight, the rewards should be better. If you place in the top 7, you can get 4-5 frags. Placing in the top 3 will get you at least 8 frags. If you get top damage without placing eyes, you have a chance of obtaining boots, helmet, claw, or 13 frags.
Dragon Health
It looks like the Hypixel Skyblock Wiki still hasn’t updated the dragon health numbers.
Here are the old dragon healths:
- Protector: 7,500,000
- Old: 12,000,000
- Wise: 7,500,000
- Unstable: 7,500,000
- Young: 6,000,000
- Strong: 7,500,000
- Superior: 10,000,000
Here are the new dragon healths, in after the May 13th dragon health update:
- Protector: 9,000,000
- Old: 15,000,000
- Wise: 9,000,000
- Unstable: 9,000,000
- Young: 7,500,000
- Strong: 9,000,000
- Superior: 12,000,000
As you can see, most of the dragons had their health increased by 1.5 to 3 million.
How much damage do the people in the top 3 get?
The raw data can be found here.

After fighting 32 dragons ourselves, and finding a few videos of dragons on YouTube, we collected data for 42 dragon fights. Here’s what we found:
Place | Avg. Damage Percentage |
1 | 51.93% |
2 | 33.75% |
3 | 19.87% |
4 | 12.51% |
5 | 8.51% |
6 | 7.62% |
7 | 4.49% |
8 | 3.05%* |
9 | 1.89% |
10 | 1.13%* |
11 | 1.35%* |
*we only had one data value for these percentages.
Here’s a plot of this:
This is the average damage done to the dragon using percentage health, since the dragons have varying health. The player in the top averages about half of the dragon’s health. Of course, since this is an average, there are plenty of first-place damagers who do way less than half of the dragon’s health, but most of the time,
How it worked was we looked at the damage victory chat message, and wrote down the damage for the top three people and we also wrote down our placement and damage done.
Note that the ender crystals can regen the boss’s health, causing some of the damage percentages to be over 100%. Additionally, we don’t have much data for places after 7th place, because we mainly score at least in the top 7.
Raw Damage Averages
Without taking into account that some dragons have more health than others, the average damage values are as follows, from 42 dragons:
Place | Avg. Damage |
1 | 5,263,859 |
2 | 3,460,545 |
3 | 2,017,948 |
4 | 1,320,874 |
5 | 925,401 |
6 | 740,995 |
7 | 489,736 |
8 | 274,185* |
9 | 283,918 |
10 | 135,436* |
11 | 121,416* |

Here’s a plot of this data:
Guarantee 1st place?
If you want to guarantee first place, from our data, the highest damage any person did was 11,972,685 damage to an Old Dragon. The Old Dragon has the highest health, with 15,000,000. The ender crystals likely healed it a lot, causing the player to be able to do so much damage.
However, the top percentage damage done was by someone who dealt 10,738,332 damage to an unstable dragon. Unstable dragons have 9,000,000 health, so the reason that they were able to get such a high damage was because most of the ender crystals stayed up to heal the dragon.
Overall, if you want to guarantee first place, you need to be able to deal around 10,000,000 damage to the dragon, but if you want to get in first place most of the time, you only need to do just over half of the dragon’s health. In most cases, that’s somewhere between 4 and 5 million damage.
Guarantee 3rd place?
The highest damage we saw in the third place slot was 5,751,798 damage done to a protector dragon. The crystals healed this specific protector dragon so much that the first place person had 8 million damage, the second place had 6.6 million damage, and the third place person had 5.75 million damage.
If we consider this to be an outlier, then the next-highest damage we encountered was 4,336,188 damage done to an old dragon.
If you want to guarantee a third place slot, you need to deal between 4 to 5 million damage. Of course, 4 to 5 million damage is likely to get you in first place already, but in those rare moments, 4 to 5 million damage is there to guarantee yourself a spot in the top 3.
If you want to be in the top 3 most of the time, then the average top 3 damage percentage is 19.87%, or about 1/5 of the dragon’s health. For most dragons that have 9,000,000 health, you need to do about 1.8 million damage to be in the top 3 most of the time. To the dragons with more or less health, you have to adjust the damage accordingly.
Hope this helps you out when estimating what place you’ll get in dragon fights. Of course, this may change in the future, when players get stronger, or more weapons/tools/armor are released.
